![]() “Can’t we just pick her up? What if the experts are wrong? I can just see her twenty years from now, lying on the psychiatrist’s couch, saying “ And you know, they never picked me up. Never. Didn’t matter how much I cried there was just nothing. No-one cared..” And she’ll still be bawling her eyes out.” Shy Tiger Productions brings the premiere season of acclaimed Melbourne playwright Ron Elisha’s gloves-off portrait of marriage and parenthood to Chapel off Chapel on 6th October. Teaming up with accomplished actors Margot Knight and Paul English, director Ailsa Piper (‘The Night Season’: Red Stitch and The Melbourne International Festival) is relishing the opportunity to bring this rare gem to life: ‘Ron has removed any rose-coloured glasses, and is prepared to ask the tough questions. The play is unsentimental and uncompromising. The chance to consider a marriage over a period of almost thirty years is a great opportunity for reflection. Are we the same people we started out to be?’” says Ailsa. ‘Controlled Crying’ reveals the impossible balancing act of parenthood, in snapshots over 30 years. It is for any parent who has ever wished that Super Nanny might pay them a visit, for anyone who has ever been part of a family. It has all the richest elements of the drama of the cycle of life - birth, death, braces and boyfriends. At the heart of the play is a couple, trying to raise their child Millie without making a mistake. Impossible, maybe, but every parent has to try... What the critics said about. ‘A Tree, Falling’, also by Ron Elisha and produced by Shy Tiger: “… confronting and sensitively wrought theatre, and a credit to all involved.” The Australian May 27th 2003 (Thuy On) “Witty, moving, and beautifully observed” The Herald Sun, June 2nd 2003 (Kate Herbert) |

![]() It would be great if you could get along to support the cast from this "Into the Limelight" project. Most have been dealing with mental issues in their lives and the project is connected with the Alfred Psych Research unit. Apart from all that it's a fun, joyous and very silly (and cheap) night out. We are at Trades Hall in the Old Council Chambers and tickets are $10 or $5. Hope to see you there and for a drink at the bar afterwards. Don Bridges. |
